Panels are the cheapest part of a solar system. That is the thing nobody tells you first.
Almost everyone pricing solar starts by pricing panels. It is the visible part, it is the part with the word solar in it, and it is the easiest thing to compare.
It is also, on a typical installed system, around 13% of what you will pay. You can get every panel on the roof for free and still be looking at most of the invoice.
That is not a reason to ignore panel prices — there is a real difference between a good buy and a poor one, and we set it out below with the figures from our own shop.
It is a reason to know where the number sits before you use it to choose an installer. The prices here are per panel, including VAT, as listed today, and they are what we charge anywhere in Gauteng.
Panels, on an installed system

Per-panel prices look close together. Per watt they are not — and rand per watt is the only figure that lets you compare a 465 W panel with a 610 W one honestly. All prices include VAT.

Read down the middle column and the spread is obvious: the 595 W panel delivers a watt for R2.76, the 465 W for R4.44. That is a 61% difference on the same brand, and it is why we default to the 595 W unless the roof gives us a reason not to. The 465 W is not a bad panel — it is a smaller one, and sometimes a smaller panel is the only thing that fits between a hip and a chimney.
What actually separates one panel from another
Four things matter to a system that has to still be working in fifteen years. Wattage on its own is not one of them.

Rand per watt
The only fair comparison. A roof does not care how many panels are on it; it cares how many watts. Divide the price by the wattage before you compare anything.

Physical size versus your roof
A 610 W panel is a big sheet of glass. On a broken-up tile roof with hips, valleys and a chimney, four smaller panels can out-generate three larger ones simply by fitting.

Bifacial or not
A bifacial panel also generates off its back face from light bouncing off the roof. It is worth real watts on a light-coloured flat roof and close to nothing flush-mounted on dark tile. Pay for it where it will do something.

The warranty, and who honours it
Most tier-one panels carry 12 years on the product and 25 on output. What matters is whether the brand has a South African distributor who will still be here. That is why we stock one brand properly rather than six occasionally.
Can you just buy the panels?
Yes. Every panel above is on our shop and you can order it on its own, for collection from Alberton or delivery in Gauteng at an additional charge. Plenty of people buy panels from us and have their own electrician do the work.
What we would say before you do: the panels are the part least likely to go wrong and the part with the smallest effect on the final bill. If the plan is to save money by buying components separately, the saving is not in the glass — it is in the battery sizing, and getting that wrong costs far more than any panel discount saves.
